About Us

The Kildare and West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ltd (KWWSPCA) is a Registered Charity (Charity Number CHY 6280, CRA Number 20011048)) established in 1940 to prevent animal cruelty and neglect.  It is affiliated to the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA). It is a Company Limited by Guarantee (Registered Company Number 448178) and its accounts are audited and published annually.

Along with the increased population of County Kildare and West Wicklow, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of suspected and actual cases of neglect and outright cruelty to animals, as well as an increase in road and other accidents involving animals.

Our Aims

To inspect reported cases of cruelty to animals and advise the Gardai if a criminal prosecution is needed.

To provide shelter for all distressed animals and birds, both domestic and wild.

To survey, on a continuing basis, places of concern.

To attend accidents involving animals, and provide relief.

To re-home domestic animals and return wild animals to their natural habitat, where appropriate.

To provide guidance and education to animal owners, where necessary.

To educate the general public on responsible animal ownership.

KWWSPCA Animal Shelter

In 2014 the KWWSPCA established an Animal Shelter to care for some of the animals in its care. This Animal Shelter is between Athgarvan and Twomilehouse, Co Kildare. The Shelter is open to visitors from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.  It is closed on Sundays.  To visit at other times, please make an appointment by calling 087 2517381 or 087 1279835

Directions: The address is Oldtown, Newbridge, Co Kildare, W12 EV60 and the coordinates are 53.155350 and -6.744685. The nearest place named on a navigational device is Newbridge Rugby Club. From Athgarvan, take the Twomilehouse Road (turn left at The Athgarvan Inn if coming from Newbridge), pass Newbridge Rugby Club on your right, then go over the motorway bridge.  The Shelter is the 5th house on the left.  If you are coming from Twomilehouse, drive about 5 kms from Twomilehouse until you come to  Corbally Cross.  The Shelter is then on your right, about half a kilometre from the crossroads.

We are in need of volunteers to help at the Shelter especially with cleaning the kennels, walking of the dogs and playing with them. Please call if you think you could give us help on a regular basis. There is no public transport so you would need your own transport and you would need to be over 16 years of age.

‘Noah’s Ark’

Noah’s Ark, the KWWSPCA Charity Shop, is located at 11 The Tarmel Centre, Cutlery Road, Newbridge, which is close to the pedestrian entrance into the Whitewater Centre. It is open from 10.00 to 5.00 from Monday to Saturday. It sells ladies, men’s and children’s clothes, books, DVDs, small items of furniture, household goods, bric a brac and many other items. We are always looking for items to sell, so if you have anything suitable, please drop them into the shop. You can also find up to date information about what new items are for sale in Noah’s Ark by looking at its Facebook page. Everyone working in Noah’s Ark, including its manager, is doing so on a voluntary basis so all the profit from the shop goes directly into helping neglected and abandoned animals.

‘Second Chance’

Second Chance is another KWWSPCA Charity Shop in Main Street, Monasterevin, very close to the Fire Station and opposite the Church of Ireland. It is open from 10.00 – 5.00 from Tuesdays to Fridays. It sells ladies, men’s and children’s clothes, books, DVDs, small items of furniture, household goods, bric a brac and many other items. We are always looking for items to sell, so if you have anything suitable, please drop them into the shop

While we do receive a small government grant, for which we are extremely grateful, it is not enough to meet our day-to-day expenses including the provision of shelter and considerable veterinary bills. Therefore, we rely very heavily on voluntary contributions to continue this vital work. Our administrative costs are minimal so every cent donated will make a real difference.  All the work done by the KWWSPCA including the running of the Animal Shelter and the Charity Shops is done by volunteers.  There are no paid employees.
