Lost and Found

What should I do if my Pet is Missing?

If your dog has gone missing check with your local Dog Pound. For dogs lost in County Kildare, call the Kildare Dog Warden – 059 8623388. Dogs found straying without an identity tag will often be brought to the Pound where they may only be kept for 5 days. Check with them every day.

Call your local SPCA as lost pets are often reported to them. For the Kildare & West Wicklow SPCA call 087 1279835 or 087 6887136 or 087 2517381. Send a photo of your pet to kwwspca@gmail.com and the KWWSPCA will post it on its Facebook page and ask for it to be shared. Also phone the Kildare Animal Foundation 045 522929 as lost animals are often taken into its care.

Contact your local Gardai. Stray dogs and cats which have been found are often reported to the nearest Garda Station. Check with them frequently and ask them to write down the details.

Contact your local veterinary surgeries, kennels, catteries or rescue centres in case your pet has been taken there or they have received information on pets which have been found.

Put up posters in your locality with your missing pet’s photo and your contact details. If you offer a reward don’t specify the amount.

Check on lost and found websites in case your pet has been found and is listed there. There are quite a number of these websites – the ISPCA’s website http://www.ispca.ie and Irish Animal’s website http://www.lostandfound.ie are two such useful websites. However there are also many others.

Go to places when your pet might usually go – e.g. places you usually walk your dog. Ask other dog-walkers in the area if they have seen your pet.

What should I do if I have found a pet?

Take the pet to your local vet and have it scanned for a microchip. If there is a chip present then the owner will be contacted and the pet should be reunited. If there is no chip, inform your local Garda station , and any vets in your area.  Contact our facebook page by private message and send some photographs, details of where the pet was found, and a contact phone number that we can post to our page so that the owner can contact you. Keep the pet in a secure area where there is some shelter, food and water provided, and, in the case of dogs, inform the local dog warden service (Kildare dog Warden 059 8623388) as the dog will need to spend 5 days at the pound before it can be legally taken by any rescue group for rehoming. This is a statutory requirement, we cannot take strays directly into our care.
